Saving the Planet!

Yesterday, Lars and I went to the Legacy Nature Preserve to clean up the river. I have to do so many Service Learning hours for my Race to Save Planet class. I signed us up to do this one and we actually had fun! Our job was to walk along the bank of the river and find trash. Lars had a 12 ft. pitchfork and was able to pick up quite a few plastic bottles that were floating. It really made me sick to see how people use this river as a dumping ground. Lars and I estimated that we picked about 350-400 pieces of trash. We picked up tires, box of baby wipes, somebodies pants, balls, bottles, and the list goes on. It was a great day and of course we love the shirts that we got...

UDOT is contracted to have so many volunteer hours to clean up this preserve in order to have the new Legacy Parkway Highway. They are out there every Saturday or more cleaning up.

Here is the River!

One of our many bags of trash!

Our UBER cool shirts!

When I write my paper about my experience on this river...I cannot emphasize the importance of recycling. It is so easy and costs so little. There are many ways you can pitch in: buy diapers that recycle*(yes they exist!), when buying groceries consider the thought "Will this can or bottle recycle when I am done using it?"; if not consider buying another brand that will, pay a nominal fee every month to have a recycle trash in your home, volunteer your time to cleaning up a river, park or highway, and also, teach your family the importance of recycling since that is where the example starts! After witnessing disgusting stuff on the river and elsewhere...we really do need to do our part for the generations to come!

*Did you know that a diaper that sits in a landfill takes more than 500 years to disintegrate!

You belong in California, Siggy Poo. I love that you are so passionate about recycling. I will think of that next time I throw away a poopy diaper.
